In 1917, Mabel Dodge Luhan famously left high-society New York for Taos, where she regularly hosted a luminous network of artists and writers. She purchased the property in the 1920s at the urging of her husband, Tony Lujan, who came from Taos Pueblo, and got to work remodeling it and expanding it. The property was bought by actor Dennis Hopper in 1970 before switching ownership again.

In 1906, under President Teddy Roosevelt, 48,000 acres of land that had been granted to Taos Pueblo by Spain in the 16th century, were annexed to the Kit Carson National Forest, including Blue Lake. Eventually, Lawrence and her psychoanalyst Brill encouraged her to write her own books. Lawrence railed against the dehumanizing effects of industrialization on modern life. From writers to painters to choreographers, Mabel wasted no time in calling great creative souls to Taos.

Their combined contributions, however, went well beyond Taos to make a lasting impact on twentieth-century American culture. “With our retreat-style meetings and literary and artistic workshops, we continue to carry out Mabel’s legacy to keep her home as a hotbed for the arts,” she said. She did so in the context of the Renaissance, which expressed her aesthetic impulses. She invited Italian nobility, artists and writers of the day to grace her salon and share her table. Her guests included Bernard Berenson, the famed American art historian who specialized in the Renaissance, and another salon hostess, Gertrude Stein, and her brother Leo. Program coordinator Vanessa Fortin says Taos complements the workshop experience.
